The Culture Series

For this project, the publishers at Little Brown and Octopus set a brief of redesigning the book covers for Iain M. Banks’ famous science fiction book series, The Culture Series. To answer the brief I looked to various sources of inspiration: bookshops, the MMU Special Collections, and artists’ artwork. A prominant theme I wanted to reflect in my designs was the contrast between realism and fantasy within the science fiction genre. Other qualities I wanted to evoke were feelings of escapism, mystery and wonderment. I designed and with various printing techniques, I prototyped three hand-made book covers.
